You have been at your job for a number of years now, and you just are not happy anymore. It is a real chore coming into work. You wonder, is it time to move on? It’s a big decision and you are not sure. How do you know if it’s really time to go? Here are a few tips.
1. You have a lousy boss.
Lousy bosses come in a variety of flavors. There is the micro manager who does not give his staff any autonomy or responsibility at all. There is the boss who is more interested in looking good than in helping his people. There is the boss who rarely gives feedback or praise to his workers. There is the boss who dismisses everything his staff comes up with out of hand. Their ideas are never good enough. There is the boss who believes that fear and punishment are the only way to motivate people. There is the boss that likes to belittle his employees in public.
If you have a boss like any of those mentioned above, you should seriously consider finding some other place to work.
2. You are at a dead end.
Your job has become routine. There is no challenge to it anymore. You do the same things day after day. There is no room for growth in the company or professional development. You are bored and not learning anything.
3. Many others are leaving.
If you see a lot of turnover going on at your company, that is a good sign you may want to head out the door as well. Why is your place such a revolving door? Whatever the reason, it cannot be good if the company cannot retain good employees.
It could also be a sign that people are seeing better opportunities elsewhere, and there may be better opportunities for you.
4. You have had a number of different bosses.
If there has been a lot of turnover at your supervisor’s position, that could be a sign as well that things are not going well at the company, and it’s time to leave.
