Prevent Illness in the Workplace

November 23rd, 2016

Getting sick is no fun. Besides feeling miserable, you have to take off from work and often fall behind there. Every year somewhere between 5 and 20 percent of people in the United States get the flu, which causes them to miss about 70 million days of work. That adds up to a business loss between $3 and $12 billion a year.

The combat the flu, shots and the nasal flu vaccine are effective at preventing the disease. However, they are not completely foolproof. It still is possible to get the flu, although it’s usually not as severe and does not last as long.

To prevent the spread of the disease at work, there are steps you can take. Here are a few.

1. Take off from work if you need to.

In places like offices, where people are generally working close together, it is easy to spread the flu virus. So, if you have any of the symptoms, it is best to just stay home and avoid the possibility of spreading the disease. Here are the symptoms of flu – fever, headache, extreme tiredness, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhea.

2. Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze.

The virus is spread through mucus, so you need to cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze. Use the inside of your elbow to cover, so you don’t get any mucus on your hand and spread the virus that way.

3. Wash your hands.

Do this often. And when you wash, rub your hands together for at least 15 to 20 seconds using soap and warm water.

4. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

It is easy to transfer the flu virus from your hands to your body if you touch your eyes, nose or mouth.

5. Wipe your desk and other areas that are used by more than one person.

These places include things like telephones, desks, water fountains, microwave door handles, and computer keyboards. All of these objects harbor a lot of bacteria.
